Staying on Track During the Holidays

Staying on Track During the Holidays Its December and your family has finally settled into the rhythm of the school-year. Homework time is firm, and work is getting done (most nights). Your child is getting to bed at a reasonable time, and waking up without too much difficulty in the morning. Finally! But just when you and your child have hit your stride, the winter holidays come around and you start to worry that the time off from school will send you and your child back to square one. While having a break from school gives your child an opportunity to recharge and spend quality time with family, it presents a real challenge for families of kids with ADHD. Fortunately, there are things you can do to avoid backsliding completely over the holidays: Modify Your Routine. Start by creating a modified routine that is custom tailored for the holiday break. Set a bedtime and morning wake-up schedule that is realistic for this time of year, and stick to it. Avoid deviating too far from regular sleep and wake times, since this will make it much harder to get back on track when the holidays are over. As always, be as consistent as possible. Consistency helps your child regulate their sleep, appetite, attention, energy level, and mood all of which contribute to making the holiday season enjoyable for you and your child! Schedule Fun Activities. While it may seem like the winter break should simply be fun by default, too much downtime can lead to meltdowns and the post-holiday blues. On top of this, the busyness of the season tends to detract from the quality family time that your child craves this time of year. So, plan a fun, special activity each day with your child. These dont have to be elaborate activities. In fact, its often the simple things that go a long way over winter break (e.g., watching a special movie together, driving around town to see holiday lights, going out for hot chocolate, baking cookies, going out for a pancake breakfast, etc.). Take a few minutes to sit down with your child and brainstorm activities that youd like to do together. Then schedule them at specific days and times during the break. Let your child decorate the list, and then post it someplace where you can see it each day. Keep Learning. Let your child know that breaks from school dont have to mean a break from learning. Kids with ADHD who struggle in school start to feel like learning is a chore, and something is they suffer through each day until they become adults. In reality, kids love to learn, they just dont like doing routine schoolwork or sitting too much during the day. So, help your child remember that learning can be fun. When youre planning activities for your child, or looking for ways to keep him or her busy while you get things done around thing house, aim for projects that combine learning and fun. There are some terrific websites out there with countless ideas to get you started: com, Coolmath.com or PBS.org. Limit Screen Time. Too much screen time over the holidays will make it harder for your child to adjust once school starts back up again, and can lead to meltdowns and arguments. Set a clear plan for screen time, and stick to it. If your child argues or melts down when screen time is over, then dont allow screen time the next day. Remember, iPads, phones, computers, and television are all privileges, and these privileges can be taken away if your child isnt able to handle them. Take care of yourself. Its easy to get caught up in the stress of the holidays, and as a parent of a child with ADHD, you have even more to manage than most families. At some point, youll find yourself wishing the holidays were over already and your child was back in school just so you can have a break. Try to find at least a few minutes each day when you can do something for yourself, even if its simply sitting and enjoying a good cup of coffee or taking a relaxing bath after the kids go to bed. These small activities can go a long way in giving you the energy and patience you need to enjoy your child and the holiday season. ABOUT DR. 3 Ways To Work with an LSAT Tutor

3 Ways To Work with an LSAT Tutor LSAT Law School Blog There are many ways to have a great experience with an LSAT tutor. The key is to decide what role you want the tutor to play in your LSAT preparation. One sure-fire way to have a bad experience is to develop a certain set of expectations, not communicate those expectations to your tutor, and then become frustrated as the sessions come and go and you aren’t getting what you expected from the relationship. As you think about hiring an LSAT tutor, it can be a good idea to keep three tutor “archetypes” in mind. Obviously, your tutor might be a bit of a combination of these three archetypes, but if you read through the three descriptions below and identify better with one than the others, then you can communicate those expectations to your tutor (and choose the right tutor in the first place). Three Ways to Work with an LSAT Tutor Here are the three types of LSAT tutors that students typically seek: 1. Guide/Mentor Tutor Your tutor is with you every step of the way in your LSAT prep process. In your first meeting you craft a personal study plan with the tutor. Your tutor helps you stay on track with the study plan by assigning homework and checking in regularly. You and your tutor meet on a regular basis, at least once a week, to work on developing your skills. You modify your study plan periodically to reflect your growth as you progress through the study plan. This type of tutor works best for students who have lots of time before the LSAT and like have formal structure to their tutoring relationships. Note of caution â€" if you’re looking for this type of tutoring relationship, and the potential tutor you’re evaluating seems brilliant but really unstructured and doesn’t even talk about study planning when describing his or her approach, then this particular tutor probably isn’t the one for you. Another note of caution â€" you still “own” your LSAT prep. Don’t use a tutor as a crutch â€" you need to understand the core concepts tested on the LSAT on a deep level on your own, not just when the tutor explains them. 2. “On-Call” Tutor You create a study plan together. Then your tutor is available to answer specific questions for an hour every week or so. You do most of your studying on your own and design your own homework plans. You tutor serves more as a specialist, who you turn to in those few areas that are tougher for you, or to help you understand the really difficult problems. This tutor is ideal for the student who has already done a decent amount of self-study and is looking for specific guidance to break into the higher tier scores. 3. “Crash Course” Tutor Your tutor dives in and helps you on specific areas where you are weakest. There is no real formal study plan. Meetings with your tutor run more on a triage system, focuses on areas where you are missing “easy” points. This type of tutor is ideal when you have little time to prepare for the test and need to bolster your basic skills in one area quickly. This type of tutor may also work well for students who are solid in most areas of the LSAT, but are weak in one section, for example, a student that needs focused LSAT Logic Games tutoring. A note of caution on options 2 and 3 above â€" if you think an on-call or a crash course tutor makes sense for you, make sure you are realistic as you assess your progress as your test-date nears. Trying to work with a tutor at the last minute, weeks before your test, can be stressful. So, if you are going to use the “on-call” or “crash-course” approach with an LSAT tutor, plan your tutoring sessions far enough in advance. Summary LSAT tutoring can be expensive relative to self-study or LSAT classes, yet at the same time, private, customized help on the LSAT can help you achieve a score that you otherwise would not have achieved â€" if you use an LSAT tutor effectively and efficiently. Identifying which of the above three “tutor types” would work best for you can help you identify the right LSAT tutor and work with him or her in the right way. Good luck. Need A Brainpower Boost Salute The Sun

Need A Brainpower Boost Salute The Sun Photo by yogicphotos via Flickr. According to a recent study, a mere 20 minutes of Hatha Yoga practice  significantly  improved participants (a group of female undergraduate students) speed and accuracy of recall on memory tests, providing them with a heightened ability to retain information and maintain focus. A common sequence of poses in Hatha Yoga is the Sun Salutation, and consists of various, flowing poses that incorporate partial inversions that direct blood flow to the brain.  This sequence is excellent to perform during those mornings when you need to get your blood flowing without having to leave your apartment or dorm. The video below will guide you through the sun salutation movements: Traditional Sun Salutation Also, for all you manly men out there, youll never have to question your masculinity while doing yoga again, thanks to the rise of Broga. Hare Pose Photo courtesy of lovemyyoga.com The hare pose, also known as  Sanangasana,  is another inverted yoga pose with brain-boosting benefits. Its known to provide maximum extension of the spine, increasing elasticity and increasing the flow of fresh, oxygen-rich blood to the brain, and can be done following the sun salutation. Feathered Peacock Pose (Pincha Mayurasana) Photo by David Martinez via  The Yoga Journal The Feathered Peacock Pose is essentially one of the ultimate inversion poses, with advanced versions not requiring the use of a wall. However, since most of us probably arent advanced yogis, it would be best to use a wall to rest your feet on while you hold the pose. In addition to drawing blood flow down to the brain, you are also drawing it down to your lungs and working your upper body. Tai Chi Photo by Joel Santos Photography via Flickr. Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese martial art that focuses on slow, meditative movements, has been shown in a study conducted by the University of South Florida to increase brain volume and improve mental activity, and may even delay the onset of Alzheimers disease. In the tai chi group, we saw brain growth of one-half of 1 percent over eight months, said James Mortimer, lead researcher and USF professor of epidemiology and biostatistics  in an interview. Like yoga, tai chi is a low impact and continuously-flowing exercise requiring heightened mental awareness. Many scientists speculate that this mental engagement may be the reason for their significant impact on the brain. High-Intensity Interval Training Photo courtesy of swide.com Commonly referred to as HIIT,  this type of training is high-impact and involves alternating bouts of high-intensity exercise followed by a rest period, which is repeated for a short duration, typically 20 to 30 minutes, or even as little as 8 to 10 depending on how hard youre working.  An example would be similar to a Tabata workout (a form of HIIT), where you would perform 20 seconds of all-out intense exercise, followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated for eight rounds. High-intensity exercise triggers the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a neurotrophic factor that plays an important role in the survival of neurons and synapse plasticity.  In a study involving high-intensity exercise and BDNF, researchers found that,  vocabulary learning was 20 percent faster after intense physical exercise as compared to the other two conditions. This condition also elicited the strongest increases in BDNF and catecholamine levels. The other two conditions within the study were low-impact running and rest, which essentially portrays high-intensity exercise as superior to low-intensity exercise in terms of cognitive improvement and learning performance. However, you may be wondering how this is possible due to the positive studies cited above mentioning the benefits of low-impact exercises on brain power and memory, which are seemingly contradictory; the bottom line is, while high-intensity exercise releases BDNF, low-intensity exercise like weight training releases an insulin like growth factor, which promotes neural survival in ways high-intensity exercise doesnt. Brain health seems to be more of a balancing act than a cut-and-dry system, which is why it is recommended to include a mixture of the previous exercises in order to reap optimal brain-boosting effects (just as long as this mixture doesnt constitute attempting to consume coffee while performing the Feathered Peacock Pose).

4 Activities Your Resume Should Include By Your Senior Year Of College

4 Activities Your Resume Should Include By Your Senior Year Of College pexels.com There are certain categories of activities that many employers look for in a college student’s resume. If you can participate in these particular areas of engagement during your college career, it will certainly help you to get hired. Trying out different activities can help you narrow down what you want to do and help you to fill out your resume in the recommended areas. An undergraduate degree usually takes four years to attainâ€"four years is a lot of time, and there is no way you could (or would want to) spend that entire span of time only attending classes and studying without any outside activities. Read on to learn about six activities your resume should include by your senior year of college! Honor Societies Belonging to an honor society (or a few) is a great activity to have on your resume. Most honor societies have requirements a student must fulfill to be eligible for membership, most particularly a high grade point average. Having been invited to be a member of an honor society will show employers that you are a good student, making good grades. Membership in these honor societies can bring you much prestige as many of these organizations have been around for a long time and have built up reputations. Continuing on in this vein, aside from name recognition and reputation, belonging to an honor society can also help you to take advantage of its network of members. For example, the  Phi Beta Kappa  Society  is recognized as the oldest honor society  for the liberal arts and sciences and the first collegiate Greek-letter fraternity. And it was founded in 1776! This honor society is as old as the United States of America and so is a whopping 242 years old. Phi Beta Kappa reportedly has more than 500,000+ members at this point. When you belong to a well-respected and long-established honor society such as Phi Beta Kappa, chances are that you can meet interviewers and potential employers who were also members of the same or similar honor societies. Have you heard the phrase “birds of a feather flock together?” Many times, an employer will be more open to hiring a candidate who has a shared network or institution between themâ€"like an honor society. Honor Society membership also brings with it other perks, like access to scholarships open to members only or to specialized job banks only members can search. Belonging to honor societies is a surefire way to boost your resume and is a key activity to have listed on your resume before you graduate. It is also important to note that while employers do look to see what honor societies a college student belongs to, they will far and away be more impressed by a candidate who not only belongs to a society but is also an active member. Going a little bit further and taking your involvement in the honor society shows your commitment and support to and for such institutions. Many students get accepted into an honor society and then do nothing with their membership, using it only as something to take up a line on your resume. Getting involved in the society will not only make you more likely to earn scholarship from the organization, present you ways to earn service hours, and supply you a network of fellow students to depend on both while in college and once you have graduated and one into the workforceâ€"it also becomes an extracurricular activity, which leads us to… Infographic by Danielle Wirsansky Extracurriculars Other activities that are necessary on your resume by your senior year are extracurriculars. It is great to be a part of organizations that have to do with your career path, but at the surface level, employers are just looking to see if you get involved. When you are a student, studying is your job. By doing more than simply studying and taking classes, you are showing that you are enthusiastic, passionate, and driven to name a few. You do more than the bare minimum. By participating, it shows that you make an effort to truly engage with your experience which is something that employers hope that you will do when (and if) you are employed by them. Joining clubs or groups that are related to your career field of interest can definitely help you to get ahead in the job market. Do you want to be a lawyer? Join the debate team and hone those argumentation skills. Do you want to be a marketer? Join the advertising club and stay up to date on the latest trends. Do you want to be an actor? Join the comedy troupe and develop those improv skills. Extracurricular activities can also be used as stepping stones to helping you figure out what you want to do with your life. Maybe you are not sure whether you want to be a lawyer or in marketing or an actor. As mentioned before, it is great to use extracurriculars to figure that out. Not sure what you want to do, but do know that you love to sing? Join an acapella group. This could lead you to becoming an officer, say the Communications Officer. You learn that you really enjoy social media marketing and, more than that, you actually enjoy it. This could lead you to decide on a career in arts marketing. What seemed like an innocuous extracurricular that you enjoyed could help you find yourself and learn what you wanted to do with your life. It helped you to develop skills that will get you hired in that field. I mean, we have all got to start somewhere, right? There are so many options of organizations and activities that you can get involved in that can somehow help you to enhance your skills for your future career. Most universities have hundreds of active student organizations on their campuses for you to choose from and participate in. And if for some reason your university is lacking in the kinds of organizations you want to get involved in, your community may offer them too. And if there seems to be no options for you, you can always start your own organization, which leads us to… pexels.com Leadership Roles Leadership roles are incredibly important to have on your resume by your senior year. Employers are looking for employees that are hungry for work, ambitious, and willing to work towards their goals. It is great to be active in extracurriculars. But leadership positions within those organizations show that you can get passionate behind an organization and have loyalty to it. It shows that you take initiative and are a go-getter, important qualities in a top-notch employee. And employers are also eager to work with people who have leadership experience because of what the leadership role did to shape them. Most leadership roles inspire confidence in those leaders. They become more capable and confident, unflappable, cool, calm, and collected in the face of emergencies. They are better at multi-tasking, they are good at delegating, they are good at communicating. Leaders have negotiation skills, they have a network of contacts and know how to build those networks up. Founding an organization can also show the depth and breadth of your leadership skills as well. Perhaps you are in the position mentioned earlier, where there is no suitable organization for what you are interested in. So go out and found that organization yourself! Building an organization from scratch can be a lot of long hours and hard work. But if it is something that you are passionate about, then the experience is incomparable. You have a lot of responsibility riding on your shoulders when establish your own organization, but it teaches you so many important skills, especially if you plan to work in the same career field that the organization is related to. It will really teach you the ins and outs of that field and help you make great strides in management in that field. You will have a much better idea what the real world will be like and of what demands having a similar job in that career field will be like. It can be so much work to found your own organization, but is a great line to have on your resume and give you something to talk about during your interview when you go in for a real job. Founding and leading an organization can often feel like an actual job, and so will help you to get hired in other, paid jobs, which leads us to†¦ pexels.com Employment/Work Experience Sometimes the best way to get a job in your preferred career field is to have a jobâ€"sometimes any job at all. Having work experience listed on your resume shows that, no matter what field it was in or what position it was, someone found you hireable. Someone found you to have skills. Someone found you to have a respectable manner. Someone had confidence and faith in you that you could get a job done. A job in the same career field is an awesome line to have on your resume. It shows that you have familiarity with the field and the inner workings of the industry. You are up to date on industry trends and you just know how the business works. It will not be hard for you to integrate into this new position with this new company because you have already done it before. You will be able to fit in and take on your role seamlessly (or without too many hitches, at least). Previous work experience in the same field can help to inspire confidence in your new employers that they are making the right choice in hiring you. And if you do not have work experience in the same career field that you want to enter after your senior year of college, do not fret! Having any work experience is still a plus for you in the eyes of your future and potential employers. The fact that you were able to get hired and hold on to a steady job can say a lot about your character and the kind of worker you are. It shows that you may have skills that are transferrable to your new, potential job in the industry you actually want to be a part of. By having a job or work experience on your resume by your senior year and before you graduate also shows what a go-getter you are and that you have drive. You wanted a job, so you went out, you got it, and you kept it. You were able to manage school and a job at the same time, which is a lot to ask of any student, but does show hard working a student is. Senior year of college can be one of the toughest years of college, simply because of the uncertainty the future holds. Allay your fears by working on making your resume as strong as it can be as soon as you start college, letting it progress and grow as you find yourself during your college experience.
